The New Dress

She saw the dress in the second-hand store and knew she just had to have it. It was a simple yet elegant dress with a vintage flare. Form fitting but not snug and a lovely shade of sea mist made it hers. Her husband would surely find her attractive in this and it was certainly perfect for church with her fancy church hat and a nice pair of wedges. Yes, she would wear it to church.
Sunday morning came and she pulled the dress from it's place in the closet. Her husband had returned home from work in the middle of the night so he would not be joining her this Sunday. He would miss seeing her in the dress. As she walked out of her bedroom towards the bathroom to change so she did not wake him she glanced at her youngest daughter's bedroom door. She was still camping so she would not see her in the new dress. She looked at her eldest daughter's bedroom door. She was an adult and still living at home. She could not be bothered for several years now to get out of bed at a decent time to go to church. She would not see the pretty new dress.
She walked into church and sat in her usual seat. The service was good. The message was good. After church one of the ladies walked up and complimented her on how pretty her dress was. She thanked her grateful that someone had noticed. It had been so long since she had a dress that she fell in love with. Shortly another lady of the church joined the two and commented that dresses like that were once considered mini dresses. It was not mini, nor was it along the lines of a mini dress. She knew the lady had not meant anything by the comment but it still stung.
She came home, slipped out of her pretty new dress and pulled on a pair of sweat pants and tee shirt. She hung the dress back in the closet wondering if she would bother wearing it again.
